O.k. a blank/newline cures my first problem.

But I cannot understand, why \input file${abc} does invoke an
environment-variable abc. (It's also true--- I just did it).
After your words the file file${abc} should be opened, which
is not (I created one to see that).

And why then not also allowing the percent-sign as valid character,
which is in UNIX. And how to use a backslash in filenames or a blank?
As far as I see, there are allowed UNIX-filenames, which I cannot
access through TeX, because there is no quoting possible. I tried
to pass the filename as a single token, or argument to \input, but
that did not work, I could not manage a blank to go through \input.
May be I did something wrong.
